While Pakistan can’t help but lament the ban on Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor starrer Veere Di Wedding, the Indian audience seems to be happy with the film. The first reviews of the movie are out and by and large, the critics have given it positive reviews.

Here are some excerpts of the reviews from some popular publications — who unlike us were able to watch and review it:

Times of India: Veering towards a different path

Rating: 3/5

“The four leading ladies break the proverbial glass ceiling with their sexy stilettos. We’ve rarely seen women on screen who are so uninhibited about their life, sexuality, and desires. In that respect, Veere Di Wedding is a brave effort indeed. This film will find an appeal with the younger generations who can relate to the discussions and dilemmas of these veeres.”

NDTV India: Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and the girls have a blast

Rating: 3/5

“Veere Di Wedding lands several blows to the patriarchy while never giving up its masala entertainer roots. It is the kind of film that needs to work because of what it says. All four characters are dysfunctional and broken in their own way, but they are honest and unmerciful, committed to each other, and share a fantastic bond and great spirit. They derive their fierceness from being a unit. We can sit near them, but — to borrow from Tina Fey’s Mean Girls — we can’t sit with them. Nobody stands in the way of their decisions. Some girls will always choose to argue, just as some mothers will always choose to harangue. We haven’t seen these women on screen before, and they will serve as an awakening. India could do with an alarm call.”

Bollywood Hungama:

Rating: 3/5

“Veere Di Wedding rests on a great idea and interesting characters. But it doesn’t translate into a fully entertaining fare. The direction plays a spoilsport. The chemistry of all the four actresses is brilliant and looks very convincing.
Overall, it could be said that it’s a movie with a bold theme that defies stereotypes and delivers a shock value. At the box office, the multiplex audience and the youth [especially female] will patronize the film in a big way. Watch it for all the fun and madness created by the four leading ladies”

Gulf News: Kareena leads her girls to victory

Rating: 3/5

“The story and the twists aren’t life altering or shocking, but the ladies and their kinship is organic enough to be believable. While the women are a force to reckon with in this film, the men are decidedly forgettable. They are no match for the women in terms of personality or aura. It is that kind of a film that isn’t going to make you any wiser in love or life, but Veere Di Wedding will go down as an engaging film that doesn’t hurt the eye.”

Khaleej Times: More than a chick flick for sure

Rating: 4/5

“Veere Di Wedding
is more than a chick flick for sure despite the fact that the antics of the four friends and their sartorial choices. It is the perfect movie for a girls’ day out and is bound to make you laugh as well as bond over common issues. Sonam specially aces in her role as the desperate-to-get hitched hot shot lawyer. Not to be left behind by Swara Bhaskar whose ‘on-the-verge-of-divorce’ character gives feminism a new dimension and the perfectly cast Shikha who holds her own in such stalwart company. Let’s not forget Kareena who gets enough chance to show both her comic side as well as her dramatic chops.”

Are you sad that you won’t be able to watch the movie on the big screen? We definitely are.
