Kangana Ranaut is perhaps the most underrated actress in Bollywood; we feel she gets more appreciation for her controversial view points rather than her films. But there’s no denying that she has delivered some great roles such as in Gangster, Tanu weds Manu returns, Queen and Rangoon, to name a few of our favourites.
Her performance in Queen had us all in stitches and the best part was the fact that it was a rare female-centered film with a great script, which made it such a super hit. Watching the teaser for Simran, it seems like the actress is back in a similar role! The teaser gives away nothing about the plot of the film, but we know that Simran is based on a true crime story about a Gujrati NRI nurse who robbed banks to pay off her gambling debts. We see Kangana in a goofy role, which she is a complete natural at portraying, and we are reminded of the scenes from Queen where she was drunk and carefree in Paris, which were also some of the best acts in the movie.
We would definitely not be as excited to watch the Simran if it featured another actress; it is Kangana’s great acting skills and persona that appeal to her fans and this film seems no different. Her personality, plus the background music, strongly reminds us of Ranbir Kapoor’s Barfi, which of course raises more questions and curiosity!
Since the release of the teaser and poster, where Kanga is also credited as an “additional writer,” the film has already caught a lot of attention. On one hand Kangana is claiming that she changed a supposedly dark crime thriller into a comedy whereas the original writer of the script, Apurva Asrani, wrote in a lengthy Facebook post that this is not even close to the truth. According to Asrani, Kangana has only tweaked a few dialogues, but demanded credit from the director, Hansal Mehta, who wrongly allowed it without Asrani’s consent.
Whether this is a publicity stunt, or the truth, we don’t know. We are however adding this to our list of must-watch films this year, since Kangana is probably the only actress who can replace the original Simran (from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge of course!) in our minds. The film is set to release on 15th September and meanwhile, you can watch the teaser here.
