Two-time Academy Award and four-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy announced the launch of Patakha Pictures; a grant which will provide funding and mentorship to the next generation of emerging women filmmakers and storytellers working on powerful, thought-provoking works of fiction and non-fiction.

Taking to Instagram, she announced the idea behind the platform.

“Telling stories that matter is important to me and I also know how hard it is to find the finances and mentorship to do so. At SOC Films we routinely get emails, calls and visits from young women across Pakistan who want to be able to tell their stories,” she shared.

“Today I’m launching a platform that I hope will help them do so. A small grants and mentorship programme for female filmmakers across Pakistan who want to work in short form storytelling. I hope in a few years from now this platform will enable a filmmaker to represent our country at The Academy,” she added.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who is on a mission to empower women had earlier released a short film titled Women in Media that addresses the struggles and oppression women working in the media industry face on a regular basis. The short film is part of the ‘White in the Flag’ initiative that aims to give voice to the minorities in Pakistan and highlight the issues they face.
