The suspense is over because finally, after much speculation and dealing with either a kitty of mediocre or highly commercial films, one film has been selected as Pakistan’s official Academy Award submission for the next Oscars.
Pakistan’s Academy Selection Committee has selected Saawan to be submitted for Oscar consideration in the ‘Foreign Language Film Award’ category at the 90th Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will choose the final nominees for all award categories including Best Foreign Language Film in January 2018. The complete and final list of Oscar nominees will be announced on 23rd January 2018 with the presentation show for the 90th Academy Awards scheduled to take place on 4th March 2018.
Saawan has already won the ‘Best Foreign Language Feature Film’ award at the Madrid International Film Festival 2017 and the ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Soundtrack Award’ at Salento International Film Festival in Italy earlier this month. It falls in the Moor, Shah and Manto genre of films based on reality as opposed to fantasy and in its narrative tells a story that will resonate with the world as Pakistani.
“(Saawan is) a well-made and powerful film – script, acting, art direction, cinematography were all executed with precision. Most importantly, it’s emotionally engaging all the way to the end!† Ali Hamza, who is on Pakistan’s Academy Award selection committee said. He joins Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Jergees Seja, Nadim Mandviwala, Asim Raza, Momina Duraid, Muhammad Hania, Sakina Sami and Rizwan Beyg on the committee.
“Saawan carries a message of hope,” writer/producer Mashood Qadri said in a press release and we hope it makes the cut for the final nominations!
