Padmavati is based on the legend that Alauddin Khijli (played by Ranveer Singh) invades Chittor to capture the already-married Queen Padmini, (played by Deepika Padukone). The film has been mired in controversy over claims that it ‘distorts history’ regarding Rajput Queen Padmini, a charge that Bhansali has repeatedly denied.

The film was to release on 1st December 2017 but has now been postponed indefinitely.
