Taking the beautiful, wild, and free creatures and caging them for human pleasure is nothing but cruel. However, what does it take to close down a zoo? Probably the death of most of its captive animals. Actors Hamza Ali Abbasi and Mehwish Hayat recently expressed annoyance on the matter and demanded freedom for animals and the closure of all zoos in Pakistan.

“IHC rules that zoos are concentration camps for non human living beings,” it’s true Hamza Ali Abbasi agreed. “Caging animals for public entertainment is CRUEL & EVIL. Pakistan has a chance to earn respect of the world & make God happy by freeing all the animals in captivity & #CloseAllPakZoos PLEASE!”

The actor/activist requested his followers to raise their voices if they agree with him. “If you agree, please be the voice for those who cant speak for themselves and make this hashtag trend for as long as we can so maybe someone in the decision making arena may listen especially after IHC ruling,” he further wrote.

The only zoo in Islamabad which attracted international condemnation for its treatment of lonely elephant Kaavan has now been closed after its final occupants were relocated abroad.

“The Islamabad zoo is now completely closed for both public and officials,” Saleem Shaikh, a spokesman for Pakistan’s ministry of climate change told AFP.

Earlier, the Load Wedding star, Mehwish Hayat had also shared her concerns over the matter.

“In a country where we’re still fighting for human rights, animal rights are a long way off,” she shared her displeasure and disappointment. Mehwish also questioned the system. “Why do we only take action when foreign celebrities get involved? This is so embarrassing. Animals are born free – the authorities must shut these zoos now!”

An argument is that zoos educate visitors, particularly younger ones, about the planet’s wildlife. But maybe, all we’re really teaching the next generation is to take pleasure in another’s misery. Also, would we humans be happy if we were caged and treated as a medium to entertain?
