Pakistan saw and enjoyed the Pepsi Battle of the Bands Season 3 grand finale last night but what got rave response was Fawad Khan’s performance; he reprised a 2008 original song that he wrote and composed for drama serial ‘Satrangi’. This time the performance came with the biggest orchestra ever on the PBOB stage and it was quite a moment.

“I wrote Satrangiin 2008; that time it was a solo effort jo haath paon maar kay kiya,” Fawad introduced the song on the show. “We’ve now gotten a chance to perform this song; all these wonderful musicians have come together to help me perform this for you. I hope that you guys will like it. It’s in the genre of world music, it’s fusion and the song is all about togetherness and unity.”

Satrangi means seven colours and the song unrolled with a little bit of soul and a little bit of rock. The strategically styled all-white look for Fawad and his band was also a deliberate departure from his EP avatar; this was almost Sufi-rock, for the lack of a better word.

Naturally, fans were ecstatic. Here, see some reactions to Fawad’s performance:

The same episode, other than winning performances by the two finalists, gave memorable performances by Strings, who sang ‘Zinda‘, Meesha Shafi packed power in her vocals with an original song called ‘Mein‘, Shahi Hassan paid tribute to Junaid Jamshed with ‘Maula‘, a poignant anthem for these times.
