This week’s episode finally, and thankfully, removed any chances of a ‘happily ever after’ for Mir Hadi and Khaani. Or at least that’s what we hope.
For the last few weeks, drama-serial Khaani had been walking down a very tiresome path. It appeared as if the writer was trying to write in some sympathy for Mir Hadi, a cold-blooded murderer.
Mir Hadi, a powerful politician’s son, had apparently fallen in love with a girl named Khaani, whose brother he had shot dead in broad daylight. He was besotted by her, obsessively, and had been transformed into a pining, lovesick puppy who just needed love for redemption. It seemed that he had turned over a new leaf, which was both unbelievable as well as frustrating if it meant that Khaani would eventually fall in love with him and forgive him. It was not an option one was willing to accept, let alone approve.
This week’s episode, however, brought the storyline back on track. Mir Hadi, restless as his love and attention was going unrequited, started reverting to his original, entitled and psychotic self. Channeling his inner megalomaniac, he turned against his father, accusing him of caring only for his political career and not being a good enough father to him.
One witnessed the beginning of serious friction between the father and son, which will not end well. The one scene, in which Mir Hadi arrives at Khaani’s home with his mother and a marriage proposal in tow, was crackling. There was not a hint of remorse in Mir Hadi’s body language; this was a man possessed with the urge to own what he desired. This was not an anti-hero but a villain of the worst kind. His ‘love’ was not being led on by the heart but by his ego and it was not pretty to witness. One actually cringed when Mir Hadi tried to touch Khaani’s face to wipe away her tears. Again, one has to mention Feroze Khan’s brilliant performance here; he completely overshadowed everyone,
As uncomfortable as the entire proposal was, it brought the drama serial back on track. We’re now at a turning point, not wondering (and dreading) whether Mir Hadi and Khaani will fall in love and live happily ever after, but wondering how Khaani’s family will navigate their way through this mess. As Sitara has pointed out, their son is dead and father crippled; how and who will take care of the three young girls? Will Khaani’s mother bow down to pressure? It’s a thought that does cross her mind, as is evident in the promo for next week’s episode. We also know that Khaani will disappear; her uncle will finally have a purpose in the plot as it appears he will take the family away in the dark of the night, leaving Mir Hadi clueless of their whereabouts.
With this twist in the tale, Khaani now does promise to get more engaging up ahead.
