Pakistani documentary filmmaker and multiple Academy Awards winner, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was invited to speak at The Academy Women’s Initiative luncheon in New York City yesterday.
Accompanying Sharmeen at the evening were other women of the film industry who have made their mark, including the CEO of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Dawn Hudson, actresses Greta Gerwig and Laura Dern, producer Amy Pascal, and the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women recipient, Eliana Pipes.
The event was held at the Rockefeller Center in NYC in the Rainbow Room, drawing much of New York’s film fraternity elite. The women were invited on stage to speak about their experiences. Following the event, Sharmeen wrote on her Facebook, “On stage I shared my journey to create films that focus on social justice issues. The room which was full of strong filmmakers was inspiring and intimidating all at once because it had so many women I look up to!”

The Academy Women’s Initiative was announced last year by The Academy, and comprises the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women, the Academy Directory and annual events, all designed to create opportunities for female filmmakers to connect, share their stories and celebrate inclusion in an industry that has longed for female representation for quite a while.
