Indian-American comedian and political commentator, Hasan Minhaj, who is best known for his Netflix show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, recently conducted an episode where he interacted with seven desi teenagers about what it’s like to grow up in America in 2019.

The 16-minute video is an interesting session where Hasan shared his experiences growing up as an Indian-American in the mid-2000s; he also asked the kids what they thought has changed today? They spoke about how white people always end up mispronouncing their names, how they navigate school, friendships, dating and face brown parents’ huge expectations.

The episode was engaging and informative and at one point Hasan asked a kid (Abeer Khan) what’s one of his favourite Bollywood film? Abeer replied, “Teefa in Trouble” and Hasan responded, “That one’s a good one.”

Though we love that both of them have seen the film, it was disappointing that they called it a Bollywood film. We definitely expect better from Hasan Minhaj. Teefa in Trouble is in fact a Pakistani movie, produced and co-written by its lead actor Ali Zafar. Ali has acted in several Indian films like Tere Bin Laden, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, London, Paris, New York, Kill Dil, Dear Zindagi to name a few. The film was also distributed by Yash Raj Films along with Mandviwalla Entertainment and Geo Films. This may be one of the reasons for this confusion.

The host also asked the kids what he should learn to be a cool brown dad and we suggest he should brush up on his knowledge about desi people.
