A crazy busy month is coming up for fashion. April will be heavy on events if the political climate allows a clear security forecast. And I do hope the country remains stable irrespectively, for sanity’s sake more than anything else. These past two months have been an emotional roller coaster taking off from news channels and after two days of relative calm we witnessed bloodshed today in Peshawer and Karachi. But back to April, if things remain relatively sane on the security front then the calendar proposes a style-studded month featuring FPW, Veet’s Celebration of Beauty, Bridal Couture Week and PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week. Before you start judging and condemning, may I also add that events means jobs and wages for technicians, carpenters, florists, tailors, lighting walas, salons and the hundreds of behind-the-camera crew that puts in more than an honest day’s work. It’s all good! Plus, I suspect all of you have been part of the lawn fare!
Event 1: Fashion Pakistan Week
So, did no one notice that Fashion Pakistan Week was supposed to start on the 20th and got postponed? I bet most of you (us) thought that it was getting postponed indefinitely (or cancelled) but WRONG! They had to postpone due to the Abbas Town tragedy and have now rescheduled the event for April 9 & 10. This is a speculative date until an official press release goes out. AND, more importantly, the event has been skimmed to two days. You may feel that doesn’t merit the ‘Fashion Week’ title but I do think it’s better to have two days of solid content instead of three days of badly tailored trash. The question is: DOES FPW HAVE EVEN TWO DAYS OF SOLID CONTENT?
I don’t have a confirmed schedule but a little bird has told me that stalwarts Maheen Khan, Shamaeel and Deepak Perwani will be returning to the runway, Sana Safinaz and Sania Maskatiya will be showing in Karachi as well as Lahore (Shehla Chatoor was in limbo), newbies Baani D, Arsalan Yahseer will be around, several lawn firms like Gul Ahmad, Orient and Kayseria will show on the runway and two new (and perhaps promising) names: Amna Aqeel and Zarlasht Faisal will make their debut. These are the names my eye picked up from a list I saw; truth be told a majority of the rest was apocalyptical and I hope they have been edited out.
Event 2 (probably Veet) in the next blog post….
