Faryal Makhdoom recently created a stir on social media after her appearance on TV show Good Morning Britain where she spoke up about women’s under-appreciated role as mothers.
While speaking to the hosts of the show, Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard, Faryal said, “We’re not just looking after our children but the entire house. A CEO of the house that’s not getting paid. It’s laundry, cooking, cleaning, looking after your children, and I think when you put it all together, we should get paid more than a surgeon or a lawyer, it adds up to £100k a year, more than that.”
Amelle Berrabah, another guest on the show, disagreed with Faryal and talked about how a price can’t be put on contributing to your child’s upbringing. “If you choose to have children you should bring them up with love I just don’t see it as a job,” Amelle said.
Faryal, however, added that she’s been lucky enough to get help for taking care of her children, but also said, “What about some of my friends who can’t afford it, they have to leave work to look after their children because childcare is more expensive and their husbands don’t have that extra money to give their wives. I feel like we’re helping the economy by staying home and doing all the work we would be getting from the government.”
