There’s a difference between having an opinion and disrespecting someone, however, cricket star Shoaib Akhtar seems to be unaware of the concept. While voicing his thoughts about the HBL PSL 2021 anthem sung by Naseebo Lal, Aima Baig and Young Stunners, the cricketer got carried away and passed on rather derogatory remarks that did not go down well with social media users.

Shoaib posted a clip from his ‘review’ on social media in which he called Groove Mera a bad song with a bad composition. “Really disappointed by the anthem this year. Is this how you’re taking PSL brand up? Going down every year. Kon banata hai yeh,” he wrote.

“Aren’t you ashamed?” he questioned the makers of the song, claiming that it was scaring his children. “My kid hasn’t spoken in three days because of this song,” he remarked with a smirk adding that he should file a case against the makers.

The complete video is nine-minutes long and available on this YouTube channel.

While there’s nothing wrong in constructive criticism and voicing one’s opinion, this ‘review’ looks like a desperate and disrespectful cry for attention. Several celebrities found it distasteful and pointed the need to maintain respect.

“Oh dear, this is in bad taste. One thing to not like a song, another thing to run down artists, musicians this way,” commented Anoushey Ashraf.

“Big fan of Shoaib Akhtar but not the way he’s bashing the new anthem. Some people, including many of your friends, fans and family, like the track,” she added explaining that difference of opinion is welcome, degrading someone’s work isn’t.

“Don’t like the track, cool. Hating on it this way? Not cool,” she concluded.

Singer turned actor, Haroon Shahid also shared his displeasure. “Pathetic to see such pettiness. Still love Shoaib for the bowler he was!” he tweeted replying to Shoaib’s definition of the word ‘Groove’.

“It’s his opinion, that’s okay! He has the right, but that’s a stupid opinion is what is my opinion,” shared singer and actor Farhan Saeed under the same post.

“This song will be a winner in the stadiums, mark it! Well done Zulfiqar J Khan, Aima Baig and of course Naseebo Lal. Great effort!”

Composed and created by Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, better known as Xulfi, the anthem is a celebration of Pakistan’s musical diversity and a great example of inclusion.

It is okay if Shoaib Akhtar dislikes the song, however, adding disrespectful comments was unnecessary.

Everyone cannot like the same things and since the release, Twitter has been divided over the song; some people miss Ali Zafar and others love how catchy the PSL 2021 version is.
