I woke up and found myself humming ‘Bagiya’ while making my morning tea. The melodious, sweet little track from upcoming film Rangreza released yesterday and has made a place in my heart.

Picturized on Urwa Hocane, who looks nothing short of a pretty porcelain doll, the song isn’t groundbreaking but it’s the kind of pleasant composition that stays with you for a long time, which is more than one can say for most musical tracks from films these days. I have to say that there isn’t a single song from a recent film that has a shelf life. ‘Bagiya’ may not be a classic either but humming through it won’t be tedious when watching the film.  It’s a happy, uplifting and feel-good number that hits you like a burst of colours and certainly puts you in a good mood.

The colours in ‘Bagiya’ have been synchronized well and the choreography is smartly all about expression and less about body movement. Urwa has worked on her moves, which weren’t too smooth in ‘24/7 Lak’ in Punjab Nahin Jaungi, but choreographer Wahab Shah has done the smart thing in focusing on her expressions more than her footwork. She’s not a natural but I really don’t think that’s a reason to take her down; Urwa does remind me of a young Nargis, an actress that made it big in Bollywood despite not being a great dancer. Her body language is actually quite old-school Bollywood when even the best actresses danced with a gentle emotional expression as opposed to the desperate need for vulgar exposure, which I think is a good thing.

Rangreza is a musical film and Qurram Hussain’s work on the soundtrack is standing out. Let’s hope the film does it justice.
