Singer turned actor Goher Mumtaz is all set to produce his first Pakistani film, Abhee. The film will feature Kubra Khan as the leading lady and this will be the first time Goher and Kubra will be seen on the screen together.
While details regarding the plot have not been revealed, it has been disclosed that it is a romantic thriller.
“I wish I could tell a lot about it,” said Goher in an exclusive chat with Something Haute. However, he added that this movie is not for people who come to cinemas for entertainment inspired by Bollywood movies. “Please do not come to cinemas to watch Abhee if you are looking for item numbers to watch women in revealing outfits. This film does not objectify women.”
“We cannot revive the cinema until we connect with the viewers with better content rather than copying Bollywood films that people have already seen. People will come out and watch films when you show them who they really are as a nation,” he explained his perspective.
The Jal singer said that this film is for those who love Pakistan, Pakistani music, and Pakistani culture.”I have done my research on what’s really affecting our cinemas; the film will be a thought-provoking process with lots of fun, romance, and great music to it.”
Sohaib Mansoor is the man who has made stars in our industry with superhits like Khuda Kay Liye and Bol. He is a director highly responsible for the revival of Pakistani Cinema. The ace writer has also written a song titled ‘Ab Hamari Baari Hai Sir Jee’ for the film.
Goher was all praise and admiration while speaking of his contribution. “Shoaib Mansoor sahab has written a very interesting song for the film. While composing the song I understood the depth of his vision. The lyrics were exactly what I needed.”
“He gave a reality check to the script while I was writing it with the very talented Shoaib Rabbani, who helped develop the screenplay,” added Goher. As for his leading lady in the film, he said that it was a wonderful experience and she also turned singer for this project. “It was a great working relationship with her. I made her sing a song too.”
Unlike most films where the female lead is often sidelined, it is said that the film will feature Kubra in a powerful position. “Our female lead holds firm ground in the story and carries the narrative forward,” revealed Sohaib Rabbani, the screenplay writer.
It has also been revealed that Gohar has been working on this project for 6 years. “A film takes a long time. You have to get the story together and then there are finances you need to manage,” Rabbani explained. “We hope with Abhee we can not only bring the true spirit of cinema back but also convey a strong and powerful patriotic message for the viewers.”
“With this film, Gohar is taking music, especially cinema music to another level,” he added. Apart from Goher himself and Kubra, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Tanya Wells, and Aima Baig have also lent their vocals to the film.
Abhee also features a strong supporting cast including Asif Raza Mir, Yasra Rizvi, Hina Bayat, Saleem Sheikh, Usman Peerzada, Mehmood Aslam, and Mohammad Ehteshamuddin among others.
Directed by Asad Malik, the script has been written by Goher who is producing Abhee in collaboration with Daniel Johns Productions. The film is currently in its production phase.
