With the new year ringing in less than a week, the holiday season marking the end of 2018 has proven to be a perplexing time for the Pakistani box office with a couple of upsets and surprises at hand.

According to independent box office websites and sources, the films that were battling it out currently and last week namely – Zero, Aquaman, 2.0 and 3 Bahadur: Rise of the Warriors – have seen a rather surprising ebb and flow in their collections. Where the former two have broken a number of records for Pakistani cinema standards, the latter pair has failed to impress.

If reports are to be believed, Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero, which in India has opened to mixed reviews, has seen healthy growth in Pakistan as it has gone to collect an approximate PKR 7 crore over the weekend. Similarly, DC Universe’s Aquaman has also managed to rake in a handsome collection in the Pakistani market by making close to PKR 8 crore in the same time. However, in contrast, Akshay Kumar’s 2.0, which was commended for its CGI, failed to win over fans and ended its lifetime collection in the country at PKR 6 crore.

On the other hand, Oscar-winning filmmaker, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s 3 Bahadur: Rise of the Warriors has suffered due to the sheer competition by other releases during the week. In total, its collection stands at PKR 3 crore at the moment with the film still holding onto a few shows each day.

While all four films have in one way or the other carved a niche for themselves at the box office, the arrival of new films on the market such as Rohit Shetty’s Simmba this week might stir up some tough competition. But, for that, one will have to wait and see…
