The annual event by and for the resilient women of Pakistan took a step forward this year with the fifth Aurat March held right beside the Mazar-e-Quaid at Bagh-e-Jinnah in Karachi. Hundreds of women took to the streets in other parts of the country as well with only one message: equal rights for all.

This year, the theme of the march was ujrat, tahaffuz aur sukoon [wages, security and peace for women]. Despite attracting opposition, threats, severe backlashes, and even counter rallies, women are not backing off. Women from all social classes, walks of life, age groups and economic backgrounds participated. The venue was buzzing with enthusiastic individuals who used placards, chants and slogans to voice their opinions.

What motivates these women, and even a few men, to come out of their houses, in the face of ridicule, may vary. But the spirit of self-preservation and the need to bring change is common amongst all of them.

Here are some of the posters that made it to the headlines:

Thank you to those who organize it and those who march despite incessant slut-shaming and threats.
