Saboor Aly and Kinza Hashmi starrer Gul-o-Gulzar is off to a great start and the first two episodes have been extremely promising. Starting off at the same time as a handful of other big productions like Surkh Chandni and Deewar-e-Shab, Gul-o-Gulzar has some tough competition on the TV charts, however the serial has gained our attention.
The drama introduces us to the two titular characters, Gul and Gulzar, in the opening sequence and the scene’s execution makes the differences in the two’s personalities evident We can easily deduce from the opening scene that Gul is the nonchalant kind with a devil-may-care attitude, while Gulzar is the perfectionist in all the right ways.
The two characters are the crux of the serial and lead the episodes on in a seemingly seamless way; before you know it, the episode ends.
Saboor Aly is a welcome burst of energy and the character she portrays, despite being an egoistic diva, is a treat to watch. She puts on a believable act, without overdoing the ‘evil’ friend trope, even though the teasers had us on the fence about her overacting. Gul is a character you will love to hate, and that’s a testament to how well Saboor plays the conniving part.

Kinza Hashmi as Gulzar, is the best friend who lives under Gul’s shadow and always takes the hit for her actions. She is Gul’s savior and also her easiest target. Gul manipulates Gulzar to no end, and it seems that the drama will progress based on the equation these two operate on.
The serial does a good job of showing why the two might be the way they are. Gul comes from a tumultuous family, with lots of financial issues. She has a differently abled sister, Nargis, who’s a constant source of worry for her and her family as nobody seems to want to marry her. Gul, who has a larger than life persona, doesn’t like her life in a dilapidated home with a large family.
Gulzar, on the other hand, is the daughter of a professor with a modest income and has an older brother who is getting ready to go to Canada for his higher studies. She lives in a modest house with just her father and brother and has a seemingly comfortable lifestyle; something that Gul has always wanted.

The progression is well paced up till now, and we hope it is kept that way; we don’t need another good drama to head down the same road and get dragged.
Kunwar Nafees, who plays the role of Gulzar’s brother is a surprise, delivering a pretty good performance as the protective-yet-progressive older brother. We haven’t been fully introduced to Omar Shehzad’s character till now, however got a glimpse of him in the second episode. We can’t wait to see how he fares in the drama. Gul-o-Gulzar is a surprisingly good delivery among the recent crop of drama serials, and here’s to hoping that it keeps up.
