Love taking food pictures? Nowadays, everyone does. Things are no more about the love of food only but also about spreading the love of food by putting up on the social media what’s dished up in front of us.

To help all the food lovers out there to up their Insta game, foodpanda interviewed one of its global top-photographers to reveal 10 simple yet effective tips to guarantee glamorous food snaps using just your smartphone, without having to buy professional gadgets!

Take notes!

It’s all in the dish

Colourful dishes always make the best pictures. A vibrant salad with lots of fresh fruits and veggies or honey glazed wings with a sprinkle of sesame seeds – just choose wisely from the menu and let your food do the talking.

Keep an eye for the raw beauty

When the dish itself isn’t coming out well, raw ingredients can make the photo look fresh, while bright colours would make your photos pop.

Invite over a friend with beautiful hands

Showing food in hands often brings it to life. So take along a friend that loves manicures as much as yummy food creations and has the patience of a saint.

Let the white do its magic

Use serving dishes of light solid colours, preferably white, as it can do wonders in bringing out the colours. Also, there should be no smudges, imperfections or overcrowding on the plate. We suggest to just use a small portion of your meal to take the photo, and then, later on, enjoy it in its entirety!

Take the right angle

Angles are the visual language connecting you and your audience, and the top angle and the front angle are what our pros simply love.

Let the sunshine in

Try grabbing a seat by the window or outside as sunlight is the best source of light for taking pictures. However, direct sunlight will give you harsh contrast, overcast a smooth and even light. Both can work, depending on the mood you go for.

Arrangement is a golden rule, as it is the key to a successful picture. Use a wooden board to place your food, white baking paper or paper bag as a background, even spread some baking powder around for that extra effect!

Let your dish be the star

Set the focus point correctly on the main dish – simply click on the screen of your mobile phone where the dish is.

Some scenes beg for a motion capture rather than a still frame. Try the boomerang option of your camera to film an ice-cream scoop melting over a hot cake slice or honey dripping over those pancakes and leave your audience drooling!
