With the PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week just around the corner, the air is rife with curiosity about who’s showing what, and who’s wearing who. The line up has some big names and some new ones, each evoking a sense of luxe and glamour as is associated with every fashion week on the planet, be it in London, New York, Milan, Paris or our very own Lahore. Being the fashion fetishists that we are, we can’t wait to see what our designers have up their sleeve this time around.

Apart from fashion week regulars like Kamiar Rokni, HSY, Sania Maskatiya, Nida Azwer, Fahad Hussayn and Mahgul there are some names on the PLBW19 line up who may be overlooked sometimes, but can make for a pleasant surprise. Underrated designers, specially those fresh out of fashion school always vie to go the extra mile, and that’s what makes their collections so much more exciting to anticipate.

Something Haute got in touch with some new names in the fashion scene for a lowdown on what they’ve prepared for the Lahore runway, that is now two days away.

Noreen Neelam

The up and coming duo, Noreen and Neelam, have vowed to stick to tradition and their collection, Mumtaz Mahal, features a lot of Mughal-esque styles and textures, concentrating on long and flowy silhouettes, with farshi ghararas, lehngas and the classic gharara, embellished with a lot of mukesh and stone work on a jewel toned palette. “We believe your wedding outfits should be timeless and should be appreciated even after decades,” says the duo about the inspiration for their bridal collection.

Urwah Ali

Urwah’s collection is an extension of her thesis project.

Taking inspiration from Rei Kawakubo’s Tough Ballerina, Urwah Ali’s collection, Masculine Femininity, for PLBW’19 is all about women empowerment. Using her design sense to highlight the true traits of womanhood, in her words, her collection is based on high contrasts. From the fabrics used to the color palette, Masculine Femininity has leathers and nets, silks and stiff nets, and blacks and pinks. “I’ve used structure with flow in order to tell how women are intense yet sensitive at the same time,” says Urwa.

Zubia Zainab will be showing a collection titled Dare to Dream. Tailor made for the daring and empowered woman, this collection caters to women who are not afraid to break barriers. According to Zubia, the collection aims to fuse femininity with a certain, quiet edginess that will set apart a bride dressed in Zubia Zainab couture. “Dare to Dream pays an ode to empowered brides who are determined to choose any path in life, even after marriage,” says Zubia. Using crafts that are native to Southern Punjab, the collection boasts of a mix of kaamdani, gota, mirror, resham, cross-stitch, and zardozi on gossamer fabrics like organza tulles, all tied together in a pristine, pastel color palette.

Faraz Abid Sheikhu

Although Faraz Abid Sheikhu is no stranger to the fashion scene, we’re excited to see what he’s got up his sleeve this year. His FAS Design Studio will be showcasing the Parwana-e-Husan collection at this year’s bridal week, which is a blend of eastern and western designs and draws inspiration from ornate dandelion motifs. The collection emphasizes on understanding the need of the modern bride and groom to be traditional yet contemporary and takes pride in its attention to detail. Using luxe fabrics, Faraz’s collection paints a decadent picture where past royalty blends with modern times; 3D fleurettes, micro-pleatings, and bright ornate embellishments are the highlight of his collection. We can expect to see ball gown silhouettes, the traditional sharara, gharara, pleated peplums, sherwani’s and embellished shoes for the modern groom.
