Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s documentary Freedom Fighters has been nominated in the ‘Best Feature Story in a News Magazine’ category for the 41st Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
“Freedom Fighters is dedicated to Pakistan’s brave female fighters who are not afraid of facing adversity and are entrenched on the frontlines, to create a better tomorrow for their neighbors, community and country,” Sharmeen wrote on her Facebook page as she made the big announcement.
Produced by Sharmeen’s SOC Films, Freedom Fighters was part of a documentary series for the Center for Investigative Journalism. The series features the work of four female filmmakers who have produced films focused on women empowerment. Freedom Fighters interweaves stories of three brave women – a former child bride, a police officer and a labor crusader – who are fighting for equal rights for women. “The short documentary features a mix of verité sequences and animation as it follows these crusaders on a mission to create a more just country for their fellow citizens,” Sharmeen said in her Facebook post.
Freedom Fighters has been co-directed Maheen Sadiq who said, “Freedom Fighters is a testament to the strength, perseverance and determination of a woman especially in the face of adversity. We can all take inspiration from these powerful women who have braved their past and are now standing up for change, shaping not just their own futures, but the futures of generations to come.”
Winners of the 41st Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be announced online on Sept 21.
