Mahira Khan and Bilal Ashraf’s Superstar trailer released last night, after much hype and anticipation. From the trailer, we seem to be watching the story of two lovers on dramatically differing paths; a famous actor Sameer (Bilal Ashraf) whose stardom is sinking while a young struggling newcomer, Mahira Khan (Noor), is soaring to the top. Somewhere in the middle the two fall in love, and eventually drift apart. We’ve seen this before but what sets it apart is the film’s execution and frames, which are breathtakingly beautiful. We have already seen a glimpse in the melodious song Bekaraan.

Secondly, director Ehteshamuddin has given us his best in set design, costumes and cinematography to depict the filmi world. The visuals are fascinating and charming; there is an old world charm to the way we are introduced to Noor. And last but not the least is Mahira’s star presence. Superstar shows her as Noor in all the avatars we’ve been eagerly waiting for. She is playing a dreamer, a naive lovebird, a firecracker, dancer and daughter all rolled into one. Mahira comes across as an expressive heroine, a feisty performer who mimics, dances and acts and eventually becomes a superstar.

What remains to be seen is how our chocolate boy, Bilal Ashraf will perform as the quintessential hero, Sameer Khan, opposite Mahira. He’s definitely working outside his comfort zone, whether it’s delivering fiery emotion and disappointment or taking his shirt off (did anyone miss that?) and if Mahira is to be believed, then he has delivered the performance of a lifetime. We can’t wait to see it.

In the brief trailer we’ve also spotted Syra Shahroz and Hania Aamir in cameos while Kubra Khan and Osman Khalid Butt are setting the dance floor on fire; at least Kubra is. Ali Kazmi is playing a villain yet again.

Superstar is slated to release on Eid ul Azha. Watch the trailer here and share your thoughts…
