Preceding his concert for MTV Unplugged alongside Ayushman Khurrana in Dubai, Ali Zafar sat down with Gulf News for a conversation about Coke Studio, Teefa in Trouble, and of course the hottest topic there is: Mahira Khan.

When Mahira Khan was being slammed by internet trolls for her recent pictures with Ranbir Kapoor, Ali Zafar was one of the few stars who came out in support of the actress by penning down a kind letter for social media.

When asked about the reason that prompted him to come out and defend Mahira, Ali replied, “For so long in this part of the world we have suppressed women in general — especially us men who think that we are superior and women are our slaves. We feel we can do whatever we want them. We own them.”

He went on to explain the need to let people be.

“Ultimately, it’s her [Mahira Khan’s] life,” Ali expressed. “I do understand that when being in the limelight one needs to be more careful about various things. But at the end of the day we are all human. We all make mistakes and we need to be more compassionate and forgiving towards one another.”

The star ended the interview on a note that needs to be taken into consideration by all.

“I don’t think this is something great that I have done. These are just the basics. Our fundamentals and our basics are so wrongly placed that its taking time for us to get back to the right.
