The 76th Golden Globe Awards just ended (that’s Sunday night in Los Angeles) and with that heralded the start of the coveted Hollywood award season. However, while it was a night full of stars, it was the number of shock-winners which grabbed the most attention.
Starting off the night with predictable wins such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for the Best Motion Picture – Animated and Darren Criss for The Assassination of Gianni Versace in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series category, the night went on to see Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody walk away with the marquee prize of Best Motion Picture – Drama. Its star Rami Malek took the Best Actor trophy for playing the band’s late singer Freddie Mercury.

Coming as a shock for most critics who loathed the film on its release globally, it was a major night for the film and its crew as they counted their first win at a major award show this year.
On the other hand, the night was also puzzling for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper starrer A Star is Born, which ended up winning fewer awards than expected with only the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category in its support.
Apart from the major winners, the night’s biggest win had to be for Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, who won Best Director – Motion Picture for his critically-acclaimed film, Roma.
