Hassan Sheheryar Yaseen (HSY), or as he is fondly known as Sheroo, is all set to collaborate with Scottish brand Harris Tweed, presenting their new couture collection in a show that is scheduled to take place on November 30 at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
In an exclusive chat with Something Haute, HSY revealed that he is very excited to spearhead this alliance as he believes it is a perfect platform to present the true identity of Pakistan, which is nothing but beautiful. Moreover, the event is for the UK’s Association of Medical Aid to Pakistan and all proceeds will go to charity.
“Harris Tweed has a legacy that I cannot even compare with. They have been around for over a hundred years and have tremendous work under their belt. They are also working on a project with Chanel, so just to be considered in the same league is wonderful. However, I am also bringing a beautiful historical background of my country on board. Plus, the show will raise funds for the people of Pakistan,†he said.

Titled ‘Shah’, the designer’s collection is a fictitious story about a prince or princess called Shah. The entire collection is done on pure Harris Tweed whool and has no silk, chiffon or any other fabric. “It’s a matrimonial affair in which my character hails from the Mughal courts and is about to marry someone from the courts of Scotland,†HSY said, adding that his family also comes from the lineage of the Shalimar Gardens.
“Our designs have botanical motifs, geometric shapes of Islamic art which are merged with Celtic crests, lions, serpents and Scottish emblems. We have put the two concepts together to define the man and woman of today. Our clothes can show the world our socio-economic, religious or cultural references in a way that can also be perceived as sexy and elegant. We don’t necessarily have to show skin just to stay relevant in the western society,†he explained, adding, “Even the music I have arranged for the show has Celtec tunes, bagpipes and the beautifully haunting voice of Abida Perveen mixed together on a beat that is so up tempo that an elderly and millennial will enjoy it alike.â€

“My only fear was what if the assortment will look too ethnic or desi? I didn’t what to go on Pinterest and copy western designs, like a few names in the business. I wanted to stay true to my eastern roots with hints of western influences. Also, we have worked on the styling; we have made customized shoes – ankle high boots, slingbacks and riding boots — in collaboration with luxury footwear brand Gomila Intersole, crafted with tweed fabric and leather,†he shared.
HSY also revealed that he will be showcasing the same collection at the forthcoming Bridal Couture Week (BCW). “I will feature the entire collection at the finale show here at the BCW so that we can enjoy the proud moment together,†he said.
Sheroo is working on two other big alliances which will be disclosed in due time. “I have been in the business for almost 25 years. I used to believe that a design is wonderful if it is commercial for an X amount of time but this is no longer true. I see that design is growing and for me growing means to learn, collaborate, share and teach,†he said.
