Beyoncé Knowles turned 36 and her closest comrades weren’t going to let the singer have an ordinary birthday. Queen Bey’s dearest friends and associates joined hands to bestow a birthday tribute to the singer that was well- fit for a queen like herself.
Prolific women like former first lady Michelle Obama and stars like Kelly Rowland, Serena William, and Michelle Williams among 18 others paid homage to the Lemonade star with photographs inspired by her iconic “Formation†look.
The women recreated Beyoncé’s look from her 2016 video Formation; featuring them wearing a wide-brimmed hat covering the eyes, a statement necklace, long braids in monochrome photographs, with the headline “Happy Birthday Beyoncé From Your Family and Friends” on Beyonce’s official website.
But not many are aware of the abstraction behind these famous women of color and why they choose “Formation†as a tribute.
Dusky and beautiful Beyonce has rooted for women of colour and the discrimination they have to face for the longest time. She was the first women of colour to ever to make it to the Coachella headlines; the annual music festival in California that is notorious for its male domination.
Globally, most influential black celebrities lauded and choose Beyonce’s song “Formation†as a dais to highlight the beauty and struggles that loom over the black community.
What’s a better birthday present than having your community uphold your ideas and give back to you in the most gracious way ever? We wouldn’t have expected anything less for the Lemonade girl.
